Publications
The original Jolley Book that was published in 1966 by Bryant Manning Jolley (B. M.) is a historic, wonderful book. The histories contained in these pages are inspiring and reflect how our ancestors lived. “Through faith and courage they struggled, toiled and sacrificed for the inheritance we have today.”
The book was conceived and created in a day when only manual typewriters were available. There were no computers with spell check capabilities invented. There were no e-mail, Fax, overnight mail, or other modern technological advances available to them.
As we contemplate the work our ancestors did in bringing forth this precious book and the tools with which they had to work, we stand in awe of this noble accomplishment.
We who have digested the original Jolley Book have seen errors within its covers. Spelling of names and incorrect dates have dotted its pages and the pages have been difficult to navigate through in trying to follow lineage.
We hardly dare mention these things, for our intent was never to discredit those who wrote and compiled the Book. Surely their efforts to create such a work with the tools they had will go down in history as truly magnificent.
Their hope in compiling The Jolley Book was that “all who read their record would not only understand and appreciate the great faith that motivated them, but that the histories of their many children would mirror their thrift, industry, and dedication to the principles of truth; their love of law and order and recognition of all men’s rights. That we might recognize and honor them for what they were, not merely devout men true to their religious belief, but great Americans true to their belief in the right of all men to be individually free to choose their way of life. That in all things we, their children, might use their lives as a measuring stick for our own.”
Today, we can correct those errors with our present technology. That it may be done will be a blessing untold to future generations. We are certain these ancestors would want their names and dates corrected in the book they struggled so hard to create. They would want the book to be user friendly that we, their children, might peruse its pages. They would want their histories told and re-told to their posterity.
Our hope is that we may build and enhance the beauty and purity of their work; that their souls may rest in peace; that their posterity may easily locate their ancestors and their histories in their Book. These are some of the reasons for publishing a revised edition of The Jolley Book.
“May we walk and toil by faith and good works that we too may leave the world better than we found it as a legacy to our children.”
